CNC Coolant: Replace vs Filter vs Restore

How to decide whether a CNC coolant sump should be cleaned, filtered, corrected or fully replaced.

Start with the machine's actual condition

A maintenance decision should be based on observations and measurements from the specific machine, rather than a blanket calendar rule. Record sump volume, visible oil, sludge, odor, concentration and pH where relevant.

Separate physical problems from chemistry and biology

Filtration is useful for physical contamination. It does not automatically correct every chemical or biological issue. A good service record should make that distinction clear so the maintenance team knows what happened and what remains.

Record before and after

  • Machine and sump details
  • Baseline observations
  • Brix and pH where applicable
  • Volume of recoverable coolant
  • Sludge or oil removed
  • Filter condition
  • Post-service observations
  • Recommended next action

When to escalate

Use the coolant manufacturer's technical guidance for concentration limits and chemistry. Escalate unusual chemistry, biological problems, incompatible fluids or site-specific hazards rather than assuming a physical cleaning cycle will solve them.
